The annual blood drive started in 2010 on the 15th anniversary of a tragic collision between a Metra commuter train and a Cary-Grove High School bus. Oefelein was a freshman passenger on that bus, which stopped at a traffic light partially across the train tracks on October 25, 1995 and claimed the lives of seven of Oefelein's fellow students aboard.
